Dining Room Design Photos and Ideas

Portrait in gray and yellow shades by Olga Fradina, vintage still life, 1920s sketch.
The walls, floors, and ceilings in the studio units feature pale wood finishes.
European oak flooring runs throughout the first floor spaces in the kitchen, dining, and living areas.
Pictured is a dining area furnished with a Bolia table and &Tradition chairs. Owners can personalize the interiors with their choice of furniture, finishes and fittings.
Woodworker Leon Lebeniste crafted the dining table in white oak to match the Maruni dining chairs.

The loft features ceramic plates by local makers that are available for sale online.
Sarah Butler and Mel Elias’s Siberian husky, Rooney, reclines in the renovated dining room of their Los Angeles home. The raised floor provides easy access to mechanical systems, something the house lacked as originally built.
Large sliding glass doors access the covered deck, where guests can barbeque. The lights run on solar-power. “The lighting at night is warm,” says St-Laurent. “It's really nice because when you're in the forest and the atmosphere is blue because of the water, then the cabin is like a lantern.”

The kitchen and dining area is the heart of the home.
A tall timber cabinet divides the living and dining areas, and holds a collection of mementoes and objects.
Purple walls contrast with stone masonry and introduce a modern sensibility.
One of their favorite pieces is the dining nook banquette. “We both grew up in Germany,” explains Hoeller, “where wraparound seating areas around the dining or kitchen table are common.”
The round oak dining room table is a custom design by Julie Mølsgaard, creative consultant to and close collaborator of the Vipp team.
A custom-designed oak grid shelf by Julie Mølsgaard provides a striking framework for Jette's prized collection of ceramics.
Alex enjoys a sun-filled breakfast at the built-in dining table and bench, one of many space-saving designs.
The ceilings are highest in the kitchen, which creates a very "active" space, says Nwankpa Gillespie, for everyone to gather around the 4-by-10-foot island. Skylights and custom angled windows usher in natural light without allowing the neighbors to see in, and draw the eye up to the angled ceiling. "I think those windows created a punctuation and rhythm to the space," says Nwankpa Gillespie.
The sliding glass-walled dining room links the kitchen and living room with the bedrooms.
His collection of midcentury modern furniture—including an Eames Contract Table, molded Eames chairs, and chairs by Arne Jacobsen and Jørgen Rasmussen—found a home in the loft’s shared living/dining space.
The sliders and windows throughout the home are from Fleetwood.
In the dining area, Cassina chairs hug a Henrybuilt table. The kitchen features a concrete counter by Ryan McPhail and an Elio faucet by Dornbracht.
One of the couple’s major budgeting tips is to complete the renovation in stages, saving certain updates—and costs—for later.
Hutchison replaced the old chimney with a wall of sliding glass doors that lead out to a series of decks. The designers also raised the ceiling, exposed the trusses, and brought in clerestory windows to create a sense of brightness and loftiness. A main goal of the renovation was to better connect the home with its forested lot. "One of the things that convinced me to buy the house was the fact that when you open the front door, you see all of this green coming in through the backyard," says Georgina.
The courtyard frames the home’s main entrance, which sits within a custom steel-and-Douglas fir window system. The combination entry/dining area features a vintage Saarinen table with a Douglas fir Herman Miller top, set with Cleo Chairs by Dims and Petit Standard Chairs from Hay.
Together, Cumulus Studio and the Collins's opted for a transparent approach to architecture. In the living areas, quality charcoal cabinetry and ceiling promote cozy interiors, at once harmonizing with and deflecting attention to the exceptional views.
"When you are in the dining room, you have these amazing panoramic landscape views," Fong says. "The furniture is simple, which lets the landscape be the focal point."
The original ranch home now houses the living and dining areas, along with the kitchen.
The tempered glass and mirrors reflect light that enters the loft from the large industrial windows.
An arc motif is a recurring theme throughout the kitchen's design.
