This pastel-hued kitchen was part of a meticulous renovation of this midcentury property.

In the main residence, a black fireplace set inside a floor-to-ceiling slab of concrete anchors the light-filled living room.

Streamlined birch plywood cabinetry and a maple butcher-block counter forms the kitchenette, which isn’t intended for extensive meal prep. The building is a blend of "a bedroom and camping," says Shaw, which means much of the cooking and cleaning happens outside.

“Simple rectangular volumes with simple details” is how designer Thomas Egidi describes the house he created for architect Carlos Dell’Acqua in Malibu. “I wanted to stress its horizontality,” Dell’Acqua notes. Inside the dwelling, which is entered via a bridge that pierces the 25-foot-high main facade, the view opens up to a panorama of mountains and sea. Ipe flooring is used for the walkway and throughout the interior.

MIZA Architects completely renovated the Capilano Crescent Residence. Nestled in the trees, the home is filled with light and plenty of space. The black kitchen offers a contemporary contrast to the white walls and light hardwood floors.

The bright kitchen features a wall of cabinets with a gray glass tile backsplash. The refrigerator and oven are Frigidaire, and the cooktop is Miele.

In the idyllic Czech town of Trhové Sviny, an imaginative architect couple created one cohesive family home by joining and renovating two adjacent dwellings. The spruce-clad ceilings and calming, muted tones of the kitchen are softly integrated with the home’s original historic fabric.
